Dermaplaning

Your skin can feel softer and appear healthier without discomfort or downtime with dermaplaning. At our Waltham med spa, our skilled estheticians offer this popular skin boosting treatment, which stimulates the skin’s natural rejuvenation process.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning uses a surgical scalpel to gently exfoliate the skin and remove dead skin cells and “peach fuzz” that can dull your complexion. Several do-it-yourself dermaplaning kits and tools are available, but they generally can’t replicate the results produced by an esthetician who’s trained to perform the procedure. Among the drawbacks of at-home dermaplaning are dryness and the risk of nicking your skin, which needs to be pulled very tight during the treatment.

The Benefits of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning performed at ChicMed can be an effective part of an overall treatment plan customized to address your specific skin concerns. Besides producing a glowing complexion, dermaplaning can minimize the appearance of fine lines, reduce visible acne scars, and help improve certain types of hyperpigmentation or brown spots. When combined with other treatments, the procedure can help improve the absorption of skin rejuvenation products.

Is Dermaplaning Right for You?

This treatment is a favorite at our spa because it’s relatively quick, doesn’t require any downtime, and provides an excellent bang for the buck. It’s one of the best exfoliating treatments if you:

  • Aren’t happy with how your makeup works with your face fuzz. Applying makeup to the smooth, even skin texture following dermaplaning is much more satisfying.
  • Have had a mole, birthmark, or raised age spot sculpted to be flush with your skin, but you’re still seeing a border. Dermaplaning is an effective way to blend borders after a mole is removed.

You should avoid dermaplaning if you’re experiencing an acne breakout. Microdermabrasion is another exfoliating procedure that might be better suited to your needs.

What to Expect

Dermaplaning treatments typically take less than 45 minutes. They begin with the esthetician thoroughly cleaning the area and then using a sharp, sterile blade to scrape the skin’s surface in an upward motion. No topical numbing cream or ointment is needed because the treatment only affects the skin’s outer layers. After finishing the procedure, we wipe away the sloughed off skin cells and peach fuzz. Dermaplaning is extremely safe and you can return immediately to work or any other activities you have planned for the day. We recommend using sunscreen and avoiding direct exposure to the sun for a few days.

If you’ve been considering a dermaplaning procedure, request a free consultation at our Waltham office or call us at (781) 899-2442 to schedule an appointment. Specific expectations of each patient will be discussed at the consultation.
